The skies above Southsea will explode into colour once again as the Portsmouth International Kite Festival returns on Saturday and Sunday 27-28 July 2024. Some of the world’s best kite flyers will be showcasing their amazing skills on Southsea Common. There’s also free kite-making workshops for children to get creative with recycled materials, thanks to Wightlink, who is sponsoring the festival.
All through Saturday and Sunday (10am-5pm), crowds will be treated to tricks, synchronised displays to music and kites made by some of the world’s most famous kite flyers. Special guests this year include a team from Thailand with their unique style of kites.
Huge three-dimensional dragons and Japanese style fighting kites are among the many unique kites flying high at the annual festival, which is free to enter.
Alongside the sea of kites, there’s a packed line up of bands performing all weekend on the Bandstand, which will be located on the Common as part of the event.
Plus there’s so much more for visitors to enjoy, including craft stalls, a funfair (paid), alongside traders selling kites and equipment for people to browse and buy.
Portsmouth City Council leader Cllr Steve Pitt said:“The annual Portsmouth International Kite Festival is always one of the most popular events of the year. There will once again be kites of all varieties, sizes and colours to wow the crowds, and so much more happening to keep people entertained at this free community event.”
David Williams, Head of Marketing at Wightlink, said: “We are delighted to support this exciting event in Portsmouth and work with Aspex to deliver the kite making sessions. It’s going to be a fantastic summer in the city and we are sure the Kite Festival will draw the crowds from far and wide.”
