One of the Isle of Wight’s youngest qualified falconers, 22-year-old Charlie looks after his team of 30-plus birds at Robin Hill. He’s been training the newest arrival, a White-tailed Sea Eagle called Chief, to fly and express his natural behaviours so that this magnificent bird will be ready to educate visitors in the park’s spectacular falconry displays.
“Life here is peaceful and the laid back atmosphere, combined with scenic walks and open spaces, make the Island a great place to practice the art of falconry as I have done since I was 11 years old. Having wildlife on my doorstep for so many years has really helped me to pursue a career in falconry.
My favourite place on the Island is the coastal path above Blackgang Chine heading towards Niton, as it is not only a beautiful place to watch a sunset, but also a great place to watch wild Peregrine Falcons.
Having lived on the Island all my life it is very easy to take what it has to offer for granted. Going back to when I was eight years old, visiting Brading Downs to watch the Kestrels hovering is something I’ll always remember. Even now I will often stop and watch them in exactly the same spot many years on.”
You can visit the exciting falconry display area at Robin Hill Country Park, with daily displays. Enjoy an exhilarating display at the outdoor arena as the team provide an insight into the birds and their habits. Between displays, Charlie and his team are on-hand to meet and greet visitors
